KUALA LUMPUR: National cyclist Sofian Nabil Omar Bakri gave himself a timely boost ahead of his foray into Australia when he won the men’s elite scratch race in the Kuala Lumpur Open track championships. Sofian, who will participate in the Adelaide International Track Series from July 10-14, joined a group of five riders to stage a breakaway and beat 14 other riders at the Cheras Velodrome yesterday.
Brunei’s Mohd I’maadi Abd Aziz was second while recently-crowned Jelajah Malaysia road race champion Loh Sea Keong was third. In Adelaide, Sofian will compete in the omnium event. He will first race in the Adelaide Track Cup (July 10-11) before riding in the South Australian Track Challenge (July 13-14).
“The aim of racing there is to collect points to qualify for the World Cup Classic events later in November. I’m not going there for exposure,” said Sofian. “But I know that the competition will be stiff because there will be established riders from Australia and New Zealand there ... but I’ll give my best.” Sofian’s major objective will be next year’s Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, as he is also looking to be part of the team pursuit set-up. “We’ll be spending a few months at the training camp in Kunming (China) in August after Hari Raya. The team selection will be done after that,” he said.
